‘ODE TO THE MUSTANG’:

I wrote this a few years ago, as purely an instrumental piece, I was aiming for a repetitive and hypnotic, almost dirge piece. But it was a bit too spartan. Fabian worked on it this year and sent it back to me orchestrated with some male voice overs. It sounded so different to what I had originally planned, but I loved it. He suggested that I should add to the lyrics. The song is broadly about attachment, and started off as a lament for the Mustang guitar I’d so stupidly sold after my band days. Ideas for the lyrics came through thinking back to my search for the Mustang, desperately going round music stores in Sydney trying to find it. I remembered the sad conversations with guys in the music stores. They too had stories about instruments they had loved but sold. Those conversations were shared emotional laments about favourite instruments we had parted with. My lyrics and voice overs in Ode to the Mustang are based on those shared conversations.
